What is the difference between a certified public accountant and a normal accountant?
“Accountant” is a general term, referring to financial and tax professionals who follow specific rules and regulations, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), which are rules and standards set forth by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). An accountant is anyone that that keeps, audits and inspects financial records of individuals or business concerns and prepares financial and tax reports. An accountant is someone skilled and trained in accounting and/or someone that is in charge of financial accounts for a company or organization. We do not have to be certified public accountants to be called an “Accountant”.
CPA’s are accountants who have passed a very hard licensing examination in a state and have the required education. Also they have three little letters that define them as a certified public accountant and they are licensed by the state.
What is the difference? Not much!
What is Accounting?
Accounting is the art of recording, summarizing, reporting, and analyzing financial transactions. Bookkeeping is the practice of recording transactions. Bookkeepers tend to focus on the details, recording transactions in an efficient and organized manner, and they may or may not see the overall picture. Accountants use the work done by bookkeepers to produce and analyze financial reports. Although accounting follows the same principles and rules as bookkeeping, an accountant can design a system that will capture all of the details necessary to satisfy the needs of the business — managerial, financial reporting, projection, analysis, and tax reporting. A good accountant will create a system of financial reporting that gives a complete picture of a business. An accountant will see the whole picture not just the details.
